About | Prime Thicket

Who we are

Prime Thicket LLC is a small publishing company based in Seattle, Washington. We run primethicket.com, where we write plain-language explainers about the everyday technology people already own — the media files on their laptops, the apps they open without thinking, and the settings buried two menus deep that quietly decide how well any of it works.

What we cover

Our current focus is digital video: containers and codecs, subtitle formats and timing, audio tracks and channel layouts, hardware decoding, and the practical difference between playing a file stored on your own device and streaming one over a network. It is a subject full of acronyms that nobody explains, which is exactly why it is worth explaining.

How we write

We start from the question a reader actually has — usually some version of “why will this file not play?” — and work backwards to the mechanism behind it. We avoid invented statistics, unverifiable ratings and manufactured urgency. Where a technical detail depends on your specific hardware, we say so rather than implying a universal answer.

How this site is funded

Pages on primethicket.com may carry paid promotional links, and where they do we label the page as an advertorial and disclose the arrangement in the body of the page rather than in small print. If you follow a promotional link and install an app, we may receive compensation from the advertiser. That compensation never buys a claim we would not otherwise make, and we do not publish testimonials or ratings we have not verified.

What we are not

We do not develop, sell or support the apps we write about, and we are not affiliated with any operating system, browser or hardware vendor. We cannot troubleshoot an individual file or device for you, and nothing on this site is a substitute for the documentation and support channels of the products you use.
